Quick answer
Which car rental companies in Spain accept debit cards?
Several major suppliers publish debit-card options for Spain, but their rules are not identical. The safest approach is to compare the card type, deposit, vehicle group and coverage together rather than looking only for a “debit accepted” badge.
| Company | Debit-card position | What to check before booking |
|---|---|---|
| CentauroAffiliate partner | Accepted | Visa/Visa Electron or Mastercard credit/debit. Physical card in the driver’s name; debit cards must be nominative. Deposit rules depend on vehicle group and coverage. Check Centauro Spain prices → |
| Wiber | Accepted | Physical Visa/Mastercard debit cards are accepted; card must be nominative and the cardholder present. Virtual/digital cards and smartphone payments are not accepted. |
| SIXT Spain | Accepted with conditions | SIXT Spain accepts physical credit and debit cards at pickup; prepaid cards are not accepted. The deposit card must be in the main driver’s name and category rules can vary. |
| Europcar Spain | Conditional | Visa and Mastercard debit cards are published as accepted in Spain, but higher-end vehicle groups can require credit cards. Check the exact deposit rule for your booking. |
| OK Mobility | Premium Cover route | If you only have a debit card, OK Mobility says you must choose an eligible Premium Cover because the excess can otherwise only be blocked on a credit card. |
| Goldcar | Booking dependent | A physical debit card may be accepted depending on the pickup country and booking conditions. Goldcar says virtual cards, contactless-only payment and cash are not accepted for the rental formalities. |
| Hertz | Accepted on mainland Spain | Hertz publishes debit-card acceptance at its mainland Spain locations. The card must be in the renter’s name; for island locations, verify the specific office terms. |
Practical shortlist
Which published rules are the clearest?
Centauro
Clear published credit/debit card brands plus named-card and deposit rules.
Wiber
Clear physical-card requirement and explicit rejection of virtual/digital card payments.
SIXT
Clear Spain pickup-card rules, no prepaid cards, and named-driver deposit requirement.
Hertz
Explicit debit-card acceptance for mainland Spain; island locations should be checked separately.
Important: payment policies can change and may differ by pickup office, vehicle category and tariff. The final booking conditions always take priority over a general company policy.

Debit card accepted does not mean no deposit
This is the most important distinction. A debit card can be accepted for the rental while the company still requires a deposit, excess or other security amount. With a debit card, that amount may reduce the money available in your bank account until it is returned.
Rental payment
The amount you pay for the car, extras and selected coverage.
Security deposit
Money held, authorised or charged as security. It is separate from the rental price.
Damage excess
Your potential financial responsibility for covered damage under the selected tariff.
Card eligibility
The supplier may restrict debit cards by vehicle group, card brand or pickup office.
7 checks before you reserve with a debit card
- The booking explicitly accepts a debit card at pickup
- Your card is Visa or Mastercard if the supplier requires these brands
- The physical card is in the required person's name
- You know whether virtual cards and mobile wallets are rejected
- You know the exact deposit or security amount
- Your account has enough available funds for rental + deposit
- Your chosen vehicle group is eligible for debit-card payment
MySpanishCar rule
Compare the card requirement before the headline price
A cheap deal is not useful if the card you bring cannot be used at the rental desk.
Physical cards, virtual cards and mobile wallets
Do not assume that an online payment method will be accepted at the desk. Wiber, for example, states that it accepts physical Visa and Mastercard cards but not virtual cards, digital cards or smartphone payments. Other suppliers have their own requirements. If your trip depends on one card, verify the pickup policy rather than the online checkout alone.
What if I only have a debit card?
- 01Choose the pickup location first
Airport and city offices can have different card rules even within the same rental brand.
- 02Open the payment and deposit terms
Look for the exact wording about debit cards, deposits, excess and coverage.
- 03Avoid unsupported assumptions
“Debit accepted online” is not enough if the desk requires another card for security.
- 04Save the conditions
Keep the voucher or payment-policy page available on your phone when you collect the vehicle.

Frequently asked questions
Debit-card car rental in Spain FAQ
Can I rent a car in Spain with a debit card?
Yes. Several suppliers publish debit-card options in Spain, including Centauro and Wiber. Other companies accept debit cards only for certain categories, tariffs or coverage options. Check the exact conditions for your pickup office.
Does a debit card avoid the security deposit?
No. Card acceptance and deposit requirements are separate. A company may accept your debit card and still require a security amount.
Can I use a virtual debit card?
Do not assume so. Some suppliers require a physical card. Wiber explicitly says it does not accept virtual/digital cards or smartphone payments at the desk.
Does the debit card have to be in the driver's name?
Often the card must be nominative and linked to the renter or a person present at pickup. The exact rule varies by company, so check the booking conditions.
Can I rent a luxury car with a debit card?
High-value categories commonly have stricter payment rules. SIXT and Europcar, for example, publish additional restrictions for some premium or luxury groups.
